Jochen Heckmann was born in 1968 and grew up in the southern Black Forest Germany. He is a trained stage dancer (classical ballet & contemporary dance) and studies in Germany and in Paris (FR) with a scholarship. From 1990-1995 he is engaged as a soloist in various dance ensembles and at theaters in Germany and Switzerland. In 1995 he founds his own ensemble LOOPING contemporary dance company in CH-Zurich and receives a scholarship from our Pierino Ambrosoli Foundation in 1998. From 1999-2007 he is ballet director and chief choreographer at the Augsburg State Theater (DE). From 2007-2011 & 2015 he is artist in residence at the TheaterInKempten (DE). From 2012-2023 he is active as artistic director of the newly founded Higher Technical School for Stage Dance in Zurich (CH). He has been working internationally as a choreographer and teacher for over 30 years and has received several international awards for his dance work. Since 2005 he also devotes himself to literary writing. Several short stories, narratives and essays are published in anthologies and specialist magazines, as well as program booklets. Among other, he receives the Mannheim (DE) Literature Prize in 2008 for his short prose “Green Feet”. On September 19, 2024, his debut novel “tanzen fallen fliegen” is published by Querverlag in Berlin (DE).

- Silver medal at the 2nd and 3 Int. Ballet & Modern Dance Competition in Nagoya/Japan 1996 and 1999
- First Price (choreography) at the 3rd Int. Ballet & Modern Dance Competition in Nagoya 1999
- First Prize at the Int. Solo Dance Theatre Festival in 1997 and 2000 for choreography/dance
- First Prize at the Int. Choreographer Competition at the Royal Ballet in Copenhagen 1998
- Theatre Award 2007 for Best Production and Best Dancer Theater Augsburg
- Heinrich-Vetter-Literature Prize 2008 for his story Grüne Füsse
